Coastal Ecology at Hammocks Beach State Park with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences

Sand dunes, sunshine, saltwater, seagulls, and SCIENCE! Join us for a weekend exploring the ecology of Bear Island with a naturalist from the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. We’ll take a ferry from the mainland, set up camp at the Park Ranger Barracks, and learn everything we can about the island’s inner workings. Activities might include birdwatching and identification, dune ecology hikes, macroinvertebrate sampling, and nature journaling. If you are into wildlife, exploring the outdoors, and moving slow on island time, then this is the trip for you!

Fall Break Scholars Sampler: Asheville Edition

Cost: $320.00 (includes transportation, camping fees, tent rental, whitewater rafting, service activity, Biltmore Estate tour, international group dinner, and most meals)

University Scholars are encouraged to explore the world, cultivate their minds, and serve their communities. On this trip, we’ll do all those things and more! We’re heading to Asheville, NC for a long weekend of adventure, community, and culture. We’ll set up camp at Lake Powhatan where we’ll sleep, hike, and cook daily. From there we will strike out each day for a different adventure: whitewater rafting, touring the Biltmore Estate, completing a community service project, and ambling through downtown Asheville. This trip is a great way to explore the many facets of Asheville and the life of a University Scholar. *Please note, this trip is reserved for University Scholars only.

Bike to and Brunch at the NC Museum of Art

Cost: $0! (includes bike rental, brunch at Iris, a tour of the art museum, and a van ride back to campus)

Looking for something fun, classy, and cool to do on an autumn morning? Join us for a bike and brunch at the NC Museum of Art. We’ll meet up on campus in the morning, take a leisurely bike ride along the Raleigh Greenway to the Art Museum where we will stop for a lovely brunch followed by a tour of the museum. A little exercise, the great outdoors, an upscale meal, and some culture; and you get the rest of the day to do as you please! And just in case you were wondering, we’ll be riding in the van to get back to campus.

Cost: $80 (includes kayak rental, transportation, housing on Bear Island, meals, and a beautiful ocean view!)

Each year the University Scholars Program takes a group of explorers out to magnificent Hammocks Beach State Park for a weekend of kayaking, relaxation, and reflection. This is your chance to get off campus and enjoy some of the most beautiful coastline in our state. You’ll get to experience estuary life up close and personal as we kayak from the mainland to Bear Island to spend a weekend exploring.

Leonids Meteor Shower Viewing at Medoc Mountain

Let’s spend an evening watching the annual Leonids meteor shower at Medoc Mountain State Park. We’ll drive up, set up camp, and cookout, maybe we’ll take a hike around the park. Then we’ll get set up in the central meadow to take in the best meteor shower of the year! Then we’ll sleep in, have some breakfast and head back to campus. Now, doesn’t that sound fun?!
