Village In Action

 IMG_1567
Each year village residents sign-up for a Village in Action (VIA) group. Through the VIA program, residents take part in a series of specially-planned events that will allow them to interact closely with their fellow village residents, an upper class University Scholars Assistant (USA), and a professional staff member. These events will count towards their Scholars Forum attendance. In previous years, for example, VIA groups:
  • enjoyed dinner at local international restaurants;
  • attended outstanding theatrical performances;
  • participated in pottery and wood turning classes at the NC State Crafts Center;
  • went canoeing on Lake Wheeler and participated in a high ropes challenge course;
  • participated in service projects with Habitat for Humanity, the NC Food Bank and Raleigh City Farm;
  • engaged in discussions about important contemporary issues.
And that’s just a few of our activities!  When we surveyed our current freshmen about their experiences in the Scholars Village so far, they repeatedly mentioned how much they enjoyed getting to know other University Scholars in a casual and fun environment, how much they learned about other cultures and contemporary issues, and how it got them involved immediately in the NC State community.

Scholars Village FAQs

When can I apply to live in the Scholars Village?

Students who are accepted to join the University Scholars Program will be entered into the program and “coded” as University Scholars. Once this happens they will have access to apply to the Scholars Village within their Housing Application. Students are coded in batches every 2-3 weeks starting in mid-January. An email is sent to each newly coded group to welcome them to the program and give instructions on applying to the Scholars Village.

How do I apply to live in the Scholars Village?

Within your Housing Application, go to the Living and Learning Village Applications page and you will see the Scholars Village listed as one of your options. Click on the Apply or Update button to go to the Scholars Village application and select “I agree” at the bottom of the application. Once submitted, your status will change from “Pending” to “Waitlist.” As students are approved for the village, their status will be updated to “Approved,” typically within 1-2 weeks. If space is not available at the time your status will remain “Waitlist” until space becomes available.

How will Scholars Village housing assignments be made?

Assignments will be made based on the date the Scholars Village application is submitted. Every effort will be made to honor students’ preference requests based on available space. Every Village resident will be expected to participate in a Village In Action (VIA) group. Please note: Assignments will be made beginning in April, and students will be able to access their assignments in mid-May. You must submit your deposit to the university to be assigned to a room.  If the Scholars Village is already full you will be put on the waitlist and we will fill spaces first come, first served.

Am I required to live in the Scholars Village?

While we encourage incoming University Scholars to live in the Scholars Village, it is not required.

Can I live in the Scholars Village if my preferred roommate is not in the University Scholars Program?

While only University Scholars can live in the Scholars Village, all University Scholars (and their preferred roommates) are encouraged and welcome to live in Sullivan Hall on Floors 6-12. While they will not be able to participate in the Village In Action program, they will have the benefit of living in close proximity to other University Scholars, the USP Office and many Scholars Forum activities.
